Michael leading Mikayla down the stone steps by the hand, her peony bouquet in her other hand, on their wedding day near City Hall

Elopement · Around City Hall · August 2026

Mikayla & Michael

Mikayla and Michael got married around City Hall on a Thursday in August. Downtown is not built for weddings. It is built for municipal business, and nobody stops it for you, which is the whole reason to photograph a wedding there.

The buildings are enormous and they are grey. The only colour anywhere was a bunch of pink peonies. So I kept putting the two of them small in the frame, in a doorway, at the foot of a column, against a set of bronze doors three times their height, and let the scale do the work.

The last picture is a crosswalk. A cab at the light, a NO MOPEDS sign, the two of them walking across like it was any other Thursday. It was not any other Thursday.
